Mode Triggers
Automatically switch modes based on the active app or website, or trigger them directly through keyboard shortcuts.
Trigger Types
VoiceInk supports three ways to activate a mode:
| Trigger type | What it matches |
|---|---|
| App trigger | A specific macOS app bundle, such as Mail, Slack, or Cursor. |
| Website trigger | A cleaned URL or domain, such as mail.google.com or docs.google.com. |
| Shortcut trigger | A keyboard shortcut assigned directly to the mode. |
VoiceInk uses app and website triggers when you start recording. The mode that matches the active app or website is automatically selected.
A shortcut trigger bypasses automatic matching and starts recording in that mode immediately, regardless of the active app or website.
Add Triggers
- Open Modes.
- Edit a Mode.
- In Triggers, click the plus button.
- Search installed apps or enter a website.
When you enter a website, VoiceInk cleans the URL before saving it. A website trigger can match a browser URL that contains that cleaned value.
Duplicate Protection
VoiceInk prevents duplicate Mode names, duplicate app triggers, and duplicate website triggers. If an app or website is already assigned to another Mode, the Mode cannot be saved until the conflict is resolved.
Default Mode
Use Set as default in a Mode's Advanced section when you want it to apply anywhere no app or website trigger matches.
